What to Bring to an Alterations Fitting in Fort McMurray
You do not need to know the name of the alteration. Bring the garment, explain what feels wrong and show us how you want to wear it. A little preparation makes that conversation much easier.
Your Fitting Checklist
- The actual garment. Bring the trousers, dress, jacket or uniform you want assessed—not just measurements or a photograph. Include any detachable parts involved in the fit.
- The shoes you will wear. For trouser or dress hemming, bring the intended shoes. Explain if the garment also needs to work with a second pair or a different heel height.
- Your usual underlayers. Bring or wear the shirt, undergarments or layers intended for that outfit. For a coat, consider the sweater you normally wear beneath it. Mention if those choices are not yet final.
- A clear fit preference. Tell us whether you want more room, a shorter length or a different shape. A photo can help explain a preference, but it cannot show what is possible in your garment.
- Your deadline. Give the actual event or work date and say when you need to collect the item. Ask about availability before assuming a rush job can be accepted.
- Care and workwear information. Keep labels attached. For protective workwear, bring any relevant employer requirements or manufacturer restrictions and discuss them before requesting a change.
Show the Problem, Not Just the Spot
“The waistband digs in when I sit” is more useful than simply “take it out.” Explain when the problem happens: walking, sitting, reaching or wearing another layer. If one part fits well, say so. That helps distinguish the area you want changed from the fit you want to keep.
Point out previous alterations, worn seams, small tears and anything that has already been pinned or repaired. If a zipper sticks or separates, demonstrate the problem if you can. Ask whether a zipper repair or replacement is appropriate instead of assuming the entire zipper needs replacing.
Questions to Ask Before Leaving the Item
An assessment should leave you clear about the work, not just the price. Ask:
- Which changes are feasible with the fabric and construction?
- Would the alteration affect pockets, a lining, trim or an existing finish?
- What will stay the same, and what limitations should I expect?
- Does the estimate include all the changes we discussed?
- Is another fitting needed, and when should I expect to collect it?

For Suits and Wedding Outfits

For a wedding dress, bring the shoes and underlayers you plan to wear, and explain any changes still being considered. Bring accessories that affect the fitting.
