FR Garment Care — Fort McMurray Since 2013

FR Coverall Cleaning Fort McMurray

No Bleach. No Softener. FR Rating Preserved.

Oil sands FR coveralls require cleaning methods that maintain flame resistance — not the standard home laundry process that degrades it. We clean Nomex, Westex, Bulwark, Carhartt FR, and all major arc-rated workwear using FR-approved detergents at controlled temperatures, with no bleach and no fabric softener. Every coverall goes through a condition inspection before and after cleaning.

Unlike large industrial laundries that service camps and remote sites, we are a Fort McMurray walk-in operation. Your coveralls come in, are processed under our watch, and go out under our name — no camp logistics, no batch delays, no middlemen. Workers from Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, and independent contractors have dropped off at our Loutit Rd location since 2013.

Why FR Coveralls Cannot Be Washed Normally

Flame resistance is a chemical property — and it is destroyed by the wrong cleaning agents.

Bleach Destroys FR Chemistry

Chlorine bleach breaks down the flame-retardant treatment in treated-FR garments permanently. There is no way to restore FR protection after bleach exposure. A bleached coverall may look clean but offers no protection. We never use bleach on any FR garment.

Fabric Softener Coats FR Fibers

Fabric softener — including dryer sheets — deposits a flammable coating on FR fibers. This coating builds up over washes and can cause a garment to burn when it otherwise would not. We use no fabric softener or dryer sheets on any FR item. Standard home laundry practice introduces this risk regularly.

Standard Detergents Leave Residue

Regular household detergents are not formulated for FR garments and can leave residues that reduce flame resistance over repeated washing. FR-approved detergents are formulated to clean without compromising the FR treatment. We use the correct product for every FR fabric type we handle.

FR-Approved Detergents Only

We clean FR coveralls using detergents approved for flame-resistant garments — no bleach, no optical brighteners, no fabric softeners. The same cleaning process that removes oil sands contamination preserves the FR chemistry that keeps workers safe on site.

Controlled Drying Temperatures

High heat can cause FR garments to shrink, distort, or weaken. We dry FR coveralls at temperatures appropriate for each fabric type. Inherent-FR materials like Nomex and modacrylic blends have different heat tolerances than treated-cotton FR. We use the right setting for each garment.

Pre- and Post-Clean Inspection

We inspect every FR coverall before cleaning — checking seams, closures, reflective tape, and fabric condition. We inspect again after cleaning. If we find damage, fraying, or reflective tape that is no longer functional, we tell you before you take the garment back to site. A compromised coverall is not safe, even if it looks clean.

FR Brands We Clean

Every major FR brand used on Fort McMurray oil sands sites — handled with the correct cleaning method for each fabric type.

Inherent FR Fabrics

FR protection is built into the fiber and cannot be washed out — but still requires correct handling.

  • Nomex (DuPont) — aramid fiber, high heat resistance
  • Kevlar blends — cut and arc protection
  • Modacrylic blends — softer inherent FR
  • PBI — extreme heat environments

Treated FR Fabrics

FR treatment is applied to the fabric — bleach and high heat will permanently degrade protection.

  • Westex UltraSoft / FR-7A
  • Bulwark (Excel FR, iQ Series)
  • Carhartt FR
  • Tyndale, NSA, Portwest FR

Workers from Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, Imperial Oil, MEG Energy, Cenovus, and contractor companies have brought FR coveralls to us since 2013. If your brand or fabric type is not listed, bring it in — we assess each garment individually.

Professional FR Cleaning vs. Home Washing

Home washing appears cheaper. It is not — if it compromises your PPE.

FR Coverall Cleaning — Common Questions

Why can't I wash my FR coveralls at home?

Home laundry degrades FR protection faster than most workers realize. Standard detergents leave residue that reduces flame resistance over time. Fabric softener — including dryer sheets — coats the FR fibers and can make the garment flammable. Bleach breaks down the FR chemistry permanently; there is no way to restore FR protection once it is destroyed by bleach. High heat from home dryers can also cause dimensional changes that affect how the coverall fits and moves. Your employer's PPE program typically requires garments to be cleaned by a process that preserves the FR rating. We use FR-safe detergents, no softener, no bleach, and controlled drying temperatures. Every coverall comes back clean and properly protected.

Which FR brands do you clean in Fort McMurray?

We clean all major FR and arc-rated workwear brands used on oil sands sites: Nomex (DuPont), Westex UltraSoft and FR-7A, Bulwark, Carhartt FR, Tyndale, National Safety Apparel (NSA), Lakeland Pyrolon, and Portwest FR. We are familiar with the care requirements for each fabric type — Nomex inherent-FR, treated cotton-based FR, and arc-rated blends each respond differently and need appropriate handling. If your coverall brand is not listed, bring it in and we will assess the fabric and label requirements. We have been handling FR garments for oil sands workers from Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL, Imperial Oil, MEG Energy, and Cenovus since 2013.

What does your FR coverall cleaning process involve?

We begin with a condition inspection — checking seams, closures, reflective tape, and the fabric itself for wear, fraying, or damage that would compromise the garment before it enters service. We pre-treat soiled areas using FR-compatible spotters, then clean the coverall in commercial equipment with FR-approved detergent at the correct water temperature. No bleach is used at any point. No fabric softener or dryer sheets, ever. After washing, the garment is dried at a controlled temperature appropriate for the fabric type. A final inspection checks the zippers, snaps, and Velcro closures and confirms the reflective tape is intact. We flag any damage we find before you pick up the garment.

How long does FR coverall cleaning take?

Standard turnaround for FR coveralls is two to three business days. If you need your coverall back faster — before a rotation starts, for example — call us at (587) 276-2998 when you drop off and we will let you know if we can accommodate a faster turnaround based on our current volume. We hold garments for 30 days after cleaning; if you are on rotation and cannot pick up immediately, your coverall is safe here. For companies and contractors with multiple workers, we handle bulk orders and can coordinate a schedule that works with your rotation cycle.

Do you clean FR coveralls for companies as well as individual workers?

Yes. We handle both individual drop-offs and commercial accounts for companies, contractors, and camp operators. Individual oil sands workers drop off their own coveralls — no appointment needed during business hours. Companies with multiple employees can open a commercial account with scheduled pickup, bulk processing, and monthly invoicing. We work with turnaround schedules aligned to typical rotation cycles. If you are a safety manager or operations coordinator responsible for a team's PPE, call (587) 276-2998 to discuss a commercial program. We have been a commercial partner for oil sands operations since 2013.
