Suit Tailoring Fort McMurray: Getting the Right Fit
Off-the-rack suits are cut to fit a statistical average, not you. Alterations close the gap. This guide explains what is possible, what is not, and what to bring to a fitting.
Why Suit Fit Matters More Than Price
A well-fitted $300 suit looks better than a poorly fitted $1,500 suit. The difference is almost entirely in how the garment follows your body. Off-the-rack suits are designed around a generic proportional frame. Most people do not match that frame — shoulders may fit but the waist is boxy, or the length is right but the sleeve pitch is off. The Government of Canada's workplace guidelines also recognize that properly fitting professional attire affects both performance and perception in formal work environments.
Alterations address the gap between what the manufacturer assumed and what you actually need. Done correctly, a suit that fits properly moves with you, drapes cleanly, and projects the kind of polished appearance that is noticed without being obvious.
What Can Be Altered on a Suit Jacket
Jacket Length
The bottom hem of a jacket can typically be shortened by up to 1–1.5 inches without disrupting the internal construction. Lengthening is generally not possible — there is rarely seam allowance at the hem to release. Jacket length should cover the seat of the trousers and reach to the first knuckle of the thumb when your arms hang naturally.
Sleeve Length
One of the most common and straightforward jacket alterations. Sleeve length is adjusted at the cuff end. If the jacket has working buttonholes (functional surgeon's cuffs), adjustment is more complex and may limit how much can be changed. A correctly fitted sleeve shows approximately half an inch of shirt cuff below the jacket sleeve.
Waist Suppression
Taking in the side seams to create a more defined silhouette through the waist. This works well on jackets that are correctly sized at the shoulder but boxy through the body. The amount that can be taken in depends on the seam allowance available inside the jacket. Two to three inches total is typically achievable; more than that may affect drape.
Shoulder Alterations
Shoulder width is the hardest alteration to do well on a suit jacket. It involves significant disassembly of the shoulder seam, sleeve head, and often the collar. Minor adjustments of half an inch are sometimes possible; larger changes risk altering the jacket's structural balance. If the shoulder does not fit, the correct answer is usually a different jacket rather than a complex structural alteration.
Collar and Lapel
Collar gap — where the jacket collar stands away from the shirt collar — can be corrected by adjusting the collar seam at the back. This is a precise alteration and requires an experienced hand. Lapels cannot be meaningfully reshaped without reconstructing the jacket front.
Trouser Alterations
Hemming
The most common trouser alteration. Length can be shortened at the bottom. If the trouser has a turn-up (cuff), it can be added or removed. Lengthening is possible only if there is sufficient seam allowance in the existing hem — typically about 1.5 inches. Trouser hem length is determined by break style: no break sits just above the shoe, slight break rests on the top of the shoe, and full break puddles at the shoe. Most current professional dress convention favors slight to no break.
Waist Adjustment
Trouser waist can be taken in at the back seam or let out if there is seam allowance available. The amount is typically limited to 1–2 inches in each direction without affecting the seat or side pocket alignment. Waistband height can sometimes be adjusted as well.
Seat and Thigh
Taking in or letting out the seat and upper thigh is possible through the back and inseam. This is a more complex alteration but commonly needed — many men buy trousers by waist size that fits well but find the seat is too full or too tight for their body shape.
What Alterations Cannot Fix
Alterations work within the geometry of an existing garment. There are real limits:
- Wrong shoulder size — If the shoulder seam does not sit at your shoulder point, the jacket will not hang correctly regardless of other adjustments.
- Pattern matching after major changes — On patterned fabrics (houndstooth, plaid, windowpane), significant alterations can disrupt the pattern alignment. Minor alterations usually do not cause visible issues; major structural changes may.
- Making a garment significantly larger — You can only let out to the amount of seam allowance that exists. There is rarely enough to increase a jacket by more than one size.
- Structural damage — Pilling, thinning fabric, failed interlining, or weakened seams cannot be reversed by alteration.
What to Bring to a Fitting in Fort McMurray
Bring the suit clean and pressed, along with the shoes you will wear with it — shoe height affects trouser break. If you are having a suit altered for a specific event, bring any shirt or tie you plan to wear; collar height and shirt cuff length affect how jacket and sleeve alterations are set. If you have an existing suit that fits well, bring it as a reference — a good alteration is often easier to explain with an example than with words.
Our alterations are done by appointment for fittings; walk-ins are also welcome. Turnaround on suit alterations is typically 5–7 business days, sooner for simple hemming.
Suit Alterations vs. Buying New
Alterations are almost always worth it when: the suit is high quality, the fabric is in good condition, and the fit issues are in the body (waist, sleeves, trouser hem) rather than the shoulders. A well-constructed suit that fits your shoulders can be tailored to the rest of your body for a fraction of what a new suit costs. The calculation changes when the suit is entry-level quality, the fabric is worn, or the issues are structural. We offer free in-store estimates — bring the suit in and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth altering.
