Can a Ripped Belt Loop on Jeans Be Repaired?

Often, yes—but a loop with loose stitching is a different repair from a loop that has pulled a hole in the jeans. Bring the whole pair, plus any detached piece, to Sunshine in Fort McMurray. We can assess the loop and the fabric underneath, then discuss the repair, its appearance, price and collection time before work starts.

Which Part Has Actually Broken?

Lay the jeans flat and look at both ends of the loop without tugging it. Check the inside of the waistband too. You are describing what you can see, not deciding how to sew it back on.

The Loop Is Intact, but the Stitching Has Come Away

If one end is loose and both the loop and the attachment area look intact, ask whether the original loop can be reattached. Show any loose threads and the old stitch position. The surrounding fabric still needs inspection; a small-looking opening does not establish the work or the price.

The Loop Itself Is Torn or Missing

Bring the loose piece if you have it. A damaged strip may need repair or replacement rather than simply sewing its end down. Levi’s lists belt-loop repair and replacement among its denim repairs. That establishes repair as an option to investigate, not a promise that every pair is repairable or that Sunshine participates in the manufacturer’s programme.

The Loop Has Pulled a Hole in the Denim

Show the hole as well as the loose loop. Ask whether the fabric below the attachment needs reinforcement, and where any added stitching or fabric would show. Reattaching a loop and repairing the jeans beneath it are separate parts of the assessment.

The belt-loop section of Nudie Jeans’ repair manual (PDF, page 13) describes reinforcement and replacement as different approaches. It is guidance for that brand’s repair work, not a prescription for your jeans or a claim about Sunshine’s equipment.

Agree on Function and Appearance

Tell us whether you want to use the loop with a belt again and how important the original look is to you. A useful repair can still leave visible stitches. Before agreeing to the work, ask:

  • Can the original loop be kept? If not, discuss replacement material, width and colour. An exact match should not be assumed.
  • What happens to the damaged denim? Confirm whether the estimate includes the hole or weakened attachment area as well as the loop.
  • What will show? Ask about stitching on the outside and any reinforcement inside the waistband.
  • Is the rest of the pair worth repairing? Point out other worn areas so you can decide with the whole garment in view.

A belt-loop repair does not shorten the legs or change the waist fit. If you also need jeans hemming or another alteration, mention it separately so the store can assess each request.

What to Bring for an Estimate

Bring the complete pair with the care label attached, any detached loop, and details of previous stitching, glue or iron-on repairs. Avoid trimming away the remaining fabric or unpicking the attachment before the assessment. If belt width matters, bring the belt or its measurement.

For a first enquiry, describe which loop is damaged and whether it is loose, broken or attached to torn denim. If you already have photos, an outside view and an inside view can help explain the problem; photos do not replace inspection of the garment. The store confirms suitable work, price and timing after assessment.

For example: “The back belt loop on my jeans has pulled away and left a small hole. I still have the loop. I’m happy to discuss visible reinforcement, and I need the jeans next week. Can I bring them in for an estimate?” This is an example request, not a booking or a promised deadline.
